So I got up this morning and realized that I hadn't touched my blog in a month! Well, I've at least got a bad excuse. Between long hours at work, having a life, and trying to finish the book of mormon I just havn't had much time. On the plus side, work has finally calmed down and I finished the book of mormon last night.
For those who aren't familiar with the LDS church we have a book called the book of mormon. We also have a prophet. He gave everyone in the curch a challenge to read the book of mormon by the end of the year making various promises about receiving added spiritual strength and conviction if we did so. I did it, and he was right.
As for work... Have you ever been hired somewhere and been given the task of cleaning up everything IT related? I started with 4 win2k servers, 40 workstations, no backups, a T1 line to transition to, and an Active Directory Domain that was too retarded for a Samba server to connect to and resolve user names over winbindd.
To the credit of the person that was there before me... She was trying to do all the IT work AND the accounting work. That's just too much for one person to do.
It has only taken me 3 months to add 2 server, replace the domain, convert the workstations, move the T1, and get backups working. Of course, there were the bandaids along the way with me saying, "It'll all be better when we're on the new domain".
In other hacker like things. I wrote a little program called getwacl that prints windows file ACL information. It's really nice if you spend alot of time in the command prompt and want to be able to look at the permissions without having to do a "start ." and then right click on the file or sub folder to view its security information. I can make source and binaries available. It's only a couple of hundred lines of code. The hardest part was figuring out the microsoft ACL interfaces. It's pretty useful.
Until my next post, Merry Christmass.
